Over the past eight years, the International Democracy Day Brussels (IDD Brussels) event organised by leading Brussels-based democracy support organisations has emerged as the go-to event marking the UN International Day of Democracy.
Over the past years, IDD Brussels has attracted many prominent figures from the European space and internationally, including: Eamon Gilmore, EU Special Representative for Human Rights; Heidi Hautala, Vice-President of the European Parliament; and Maria Arena MEP; international political figures, such as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former president of Liberia; Danilo Turk, former president of Slovenia; and Sviatlana Tikhanouskaya, the leader of the Belarusian opposition in-exile; high profile speakers from the United States including Uzra Zeya, Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights; as well as many democracy activists from across the globe.
The year’s event includes an in-person conference at the Committee of the Regions, as well as online events focused on Ukrainian civil society and on hybrid threats to democracy. Speakers this year include Abdalla Hamdok, former Prime Minister of Sudan, Rana Ayyub, prominent journalist from India, and Helena Konig, Deputy Secretary General for Economic and Global Affairs, EEAS.
The new website will include all information on IDD Brussels 2022, as well as archive material from previous years.
