Sweden’s ambassador for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law
Cecilia Ruthström-Ruin is Sweden’s Ambassador for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law in the since August 2021. She joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1993 and has served as ambassador in Vilnius and at the embassy in Tokyo. In the Ministry in Stockholm she served, inter alia, as Head of the Department of Asia and the Pacific and as Ambassador for AntiTerrorism. She also served in the Prime Minister’s Office as Deputy Secretary General for the Stockholm International Forum – Preventing Genocide. Cecilia has also served in the United Nations, as Chief of the Terrorism Prevention Branch of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Cecilia holds a PhD in history from Lund University and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University. Her academic publications focused on human rights and refugee studies.
This workshop aims at gathering insights on the EU democracy agenda 2022 and 2023 and recommendations from the Brussels democracy community and stakeholders for shaping future agendas. The session will be moderated on the basis of guiding questions.
