Sonia Gassemi, born in 1995 in Algeria, is a women's rights activist and artist. She studied social sciences and interactive theater and worked in cultural programming and joined Amnesty International at 18. As a radio commentator, she discussed feminism and gained attention during the 2019 Hirak movement. Invited to the 2019 Rabat Biennale, she later studied at the École nationale supérieure d'art de Bourges, earning recognition for her politically engaged work. She now writes for 50/50 Magazine on women's rights in Algeria.
As gender disparities widen in countries with authoritarian regimes or restrictive political environments, women's political participation is particularly at risk. Women rights defenders and gender equality political advocates are developing strategies as they become the targets of authoritarian governments and far-right movements. Amidst the numerous elections happening in the world this year, the resilience of young women activists is coming to the fore.
