Editor-in-Chief, Realpolitika, and Director, Governance Monitoring Center
Zaza Abashidze is the Editor-in-Chief of independent media platform "Realpolitika," which covers international politics and works against disinformation. He is also a co-founder of Governance Monitoring Centre (GMC), and NGO which focuses on corruption and good governance issues. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in International Politics from Tbilisi State University. Outside of his work, he actively engages as a citizen and strives to defend civil liberties that are under constant threat in Georgia. He was one of the organizers of the anti-Kremlin demonstrations in June 2019, which lasted throughout the summer. He was born in Tbilisi, where he is currently based. He serves as a trustee in the Georgian Public Broadcaster and has received support from opposition parties in this role.
Autocratisation trends have galvanised democracies from across the globe and sparked civic awakening worldwide. Throughout 2022 major protests occurred in Iran, Georgia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China and Hong Kong, as citizens worldwide took to the streets to demand their rights. This session will showcase the story of four activists and how they are planning to achieve a more democratic future for their countries.
